Shelby County AIDS/STD rates by the numSHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -
In light of World Aids Day on Monday, December 1, WMC Action News 5 is taking a look at the number of STD and AIDS rates in Shelby County.
According to Shelby County Health Department, as of 2013, more than 26,000 Tennessee residents were reported to have been infected with HIV. Shelby County residents account for approximately 38 percent of those cases. Additionally, as of 2013, more than 6,000 people are living with HIV in Shelby County.
In terms of STD rates, the latest statistics from Shelby County Health Department show that gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia rates have decreased in the last five years.
There are 9,975 reported cases of chlamydia, 3,480 cases of gonorrhea, and 700 cases of syphilis. Among the reported STD cases in Shelby County, the health department reports that the majority of the people affected are African-American.
